Chania, in Crete, is by far one of the most special places anyone could visit. There’s something about it that keeps drawing me back – maybe it’s the friendly locals who make you feel at home, the fresh and delicious food that leaves you wanting more, the breathtaking sunsets and beaches, or just the unique energy that fills the air. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave. So much so that my family has decided to invest in a property here, and I couldn’t be happier – because who wouldn’t want a little piece of paradise?
Having visited Chania five times already, I’ve fallen completely in love with the island – and I’d love to share with you my top 5 must-do experiences if you’re planning your next trip.
1. Bourakis Restaurant – for delicious Cretan food
If you’re looking to experience authentic Cretan cuisine, Bourakis is a must-visit. You can enjoy delicious local dishes while sitting under a leafy roof of grapevines, with everything from fresh seafood to perfectly grilled meats, all at very reasonable prices and served by the friendliest staff.

2. Omprogialos Beach – Somewhat of a hidden gem
Getting to some of Crete’s beaches isn’t always easy – you’ll find yourself on rocky roads, driving up mountains, and navigating tricky trails. Getting to Omprogialos Beach, on the other hand, is super easy and the drive is smooth. It’s probably one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve been to, and there’s even a charming local tavern right across.

3. Chania Old Town – Visit the local boutiques
Stroll through the charming alleys lined with local boutiques, where you’ll find everything from handmade jewellery to unique keepsakes. It’s usually quite lively throughout the day but double-check shop hours before you go. Boutiques typically open Monday and Wednesday 9:00–15:00; Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9:00–14:00 and again 17:30–21:00; and Saturday 9:00–15:00.

4. Agia Triada Monastery
Explore one of the Chania’s most beautiful monasteries, where time seems to slow down. Afterwards, head to the tiny shop to buy wine from the monks’ vineyards and grab some olive oil or other local goodies to take home.

5. Lerá Cave – Hike up the Verdia Mountain
The views are stunning and the trail isn’t too tough. It took us about an hour to an hour and a half, and it’s so rewarding once you reach the cave. I’d recommend going in the afternoon when it’s cooler and definitely wear proper hiking shoes!

Every visit to Chania brings something new to discover, from hidden beaches to charming streets and beautiful hiking trails. I never get bored – there’s always something special waiting to be found and I’m sure you’ll quickly realise too.
